Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather: Historical or a big joke for the fighting world? A chronological review
Conor McGregor, the two world weight division champion from the UFC has made in the past rumors, that he’s interested in a fight between him against boxing pro Floyd Mayweather. Mayweather also showed a big interested in a fight between them two, but somehow the talk about it calmed down, when Dana White made clear that if Floyd wants to fight Conor, he needs to contact him. Somehow, all the talk about the fight went quiet and it seemed like it would never happen. Until lately the rumors started to spread again, mostly because of Conor and Floyd himself. But let’s start from the beginning.
Conor McGregor wants to fight RDA for the 155lb belt. After a long build up, the fight isn’t going to happen. RDA had to pull out because of a broken foot. Conor McGregor mocked RDA for this, said that its only a bruise and that hes scared to fight him. Just a few days after RDA announcement, Dana White spoke to the public and announced that Conor McGregor will fight against Nate Diaz. He lost the fight in the second round per rear naked choke.
The media press conference for UFC 200 is starting. But Conor isn’t there. In a tweet, he made clear that hes done with the media thing and that his job is fighting. Thats somehow funny, because he became popular also because of his talking skills. He asked for time off to prepare for the Diaz rematch fight in 200. Dana White made immediately clear, that Conor will be stripped from UFC 200 because of that. Then Conor announced falsely to retire young and started a big confusion with that.
May were the first month, where the name Floyd Mayweather came up in a sentence together with Conor McGregor. On TMZ, but also on Twitter rumors spread that they may fight together. Conor McGregor was again in the media, making big waves as it was for the first (and still) an crazy idea to let an MMA guy box (even though Conor has a good boxing background). The rumors spread over Twitter and YouTube fast. FightPromo made an amazing promo video for the possible fight.
Conor fights against Nate Diaz for the second time after his loss per submission in March 2016. The fight breaks many records and gains a lot of attention from many mainstream media. The fight lasts 5 rounds with a forth and back between Conor and Nate. Conor wins the fight per decision. Many people started to critique the decision and fought that Nate had better scores and therefore should have won the fight. Conor prepared excessive for this fight and said afterwards that Nate made him a better fighter. Even if the decision seems for many not correct, Conor did something only a few has accomplished: Knocking Nate Diaz down. 3 times. Or 1 time, if we believe Nate’s argument, that he felt 2 times with intention down to grapple with Conor on the ground. It was still 1 clean knockdown from Conor. And that’s huge against the Diaz brothers who are famous for their amazing durability and iron chins.
Dana White made at this event also clear, that Conor has to defend his title or they will strip it away from him. Many journalists asked Conor McGregor about his thoughts of defending his 145 title, but Conor always leaved the question open and said: “Let’s see whats next”.
The UFC announces that Conor’s next fight will be a title fight against 155lb champ Eddie Alvarez. At the end, that’s exactly what he already wanted to do in March 2016 when RDA pulled out because of the foot injure. Some critiques already “mocking” Conor for not defending his belt after 1 year, however, most of the media’s and fans seem to be okay with the fight.
The fight took place in Madison Square Garden, probably the most world famous sports arena. Beside Conors fight against Eddie as the Main Event, the card was completely stacked up and the pre-lims as well, since it was the first time for the UFC / MMA in New York after a long and tremendous back and forth with the state commission (New York banned MMA in the late 90).
Beside Conor vs Eddie, the main card was filled with Tyron Woodley vs Stephen Thompson, Joanna Jędrzejczyk vs Karolina Kowalkiewicz, Miesha Tate vs Raquel Pennington and Yoel Romero vs Chris Weidmann.
Conors fight against Eddie Alvarez was (like all Conor McGregor fights) hyped up. Eddie Alvarez mentioned in many interviews, the media press conference call and the pre fight conference that he thinks that Conor McGregor is overrated and that he will try to knock him out before even starting to think of wrestling with him.
When the fight started, we saw Eddie Alvarez throwing some effective leg kicks to Conor, one of them even knocking Conor for a second down. However, Conor McGregor knocked Eddie Alvarez after little more than 20 seconds in the first round already down. From there, we saw a frustrated Eddie Alvarez who (to his own words) “didn’t sticked to my game plan at all” trying to box and wrestle with Conor. Conor was able to defend all take down attempts from Eddie Alvarez and also got almost zero hit in the face. In the second round we saw again some attempts from Eddie to get into Conor’s range, whom got answered with Conor’s famous left hand counter strike. Eddie got almost rocked a few seconds in round 2, but he was able to regroup himself. However, he didn’t change anything, he tried to take him down and grind him on the fence but Conor was able to escape it.
Then he tried to get again in his range and Conor answered with a 4 time punch Combo to his face, that makes two of his devastating left hand. That was enough for Eddie, he got knocked down and was out for a few seconds. Conor won the fight flawlessly and became the first 2 world UFC champion in the history.
The event broke all records.
After the flawless win and Conor mentioning before 205 that he may fight against Mayweather after a journalist asking him who he wants to fight next after Eddie Alvarez, the rumors started to spread again. Dana White surprisingly also mentioned the fight and seemed to be open about it. Floyd Mayweather also talked to TMZ again and seemed to try to hype up the fight somehow, with him saying things like “don’t ever mention Conors name in one sentence with mine, that’s disrespectful to me”. Conor also owned his boxing licence in the California state, however, Mayweather has his “empire” in Las Vegas, Nevada, so its very unlikely that he will fight in California. However, since this would be an special event, everything is possible and i don’t think he will say no to the idea fighting in another state.
Conor gave an short press conference / interview after he gained his pro boxing license and also answered rumors from Floyd’s Manager that Floyd isn’t really interested in the fight and that he’s in the Bahamas with: “I don’t need Floyd, i don’t give a ****”. Also, some other pro boxers offered Conor a fight, but its unlikely Conor will accept them, even if he told the press that he doesn’t need Floyd at all and that he could fight anyone he wants, also some previous Floyd Mayweather oppponents.
That is all to say until now. This blog will get updated if any new updates are out!
